The Grampians and Pyrenees Wine Region

East of the Grampians - where mountain ranges give way to spreading farmland - cool nights and warm days combine to produce distinctive wines. The historic Grampians wine region produces some of Australia's finest sparkling wines and outstanding cool-climate table wines.

It was the turbulent gold era that spawned the vineyards and wineries of the Grampians region. The settlers, Blampied and Jean Pierre Trouette planted vines near Great Western in 1863 and by 1867 were winning awards in England, France and America. By the turn of the century there were thousands of acres under vine. Seppelt Great Western Cellars and Best's Great Western Winery began in the 1860s.

Seppelts offer underground cellar tours. These 'drives' were hacked out of clay by unemployed mines in the 1860s. They have been used ever since for the maturation of Seppelts sparkling wines.
