About Boroka
About Boroka...Our Environment
Boroka Downs has achieved Ecotourism status under the Ecotourism Australia assesment scheme
Boroka Downs was designed and built with environmental sustainability as one of its main goals. To this end, the concept embraced the following initiatives:
Full insulation envelope in roof, walls and slab;
All windows double glazed and tinted;
Solar hot water with gas booster when needed;
Water efficient shower heads;
Rain water tank attached to each residence.
Ongoing environmental initiatives include:
A full recycling program with voluntary guest involvement;
Use of allergy-free cleaning agents and recycled paper products;
Installation of grey water system and reed bed to treat laundry water;
Free range chickens to help process food scraps and to provide breakfast eggs;
New water management plan and modifications to water systems made in a bid to become 100% self sufficient;
An ongoing planting program which to date has resulted in the planting of over 15,000 local native trees and shrubs in the past five years.
Boroka Downs has a Trust for Nature overlay on the whole property. Using a perpetual covenant, the Trust will protect the wildlife and the habitation on the property forever. Apart from a small number of building envelopes, all future development of the property will be severely restricted by law.
Boroka Downs is a member of Land for Wildlife and promotes the establishment of habitats for wildlife by:
Retaining and protecting remnant vegetation;
Allowing leaf litter, fallen logs, and branches to accumulate in habitat areas;
Fencing areas near native bush to allow regeneration;
Planting local native trees, shrubs and grasses;
Controlling environmental weeds, rabbits and foxes;
Installing bird and marsupial nesting boxes;
Protecting dead trees with hollows for bird nesting.
Boroka Downs is also a member of Jallukar Landcare, one of 4,500 autonomous community groups Australia wide promoting sustainable land and water management. Over the 15 years of its existence, supported by Federal Government Natural Heritage Funds, the Landcare organisation has changed Australia’s approach to rural landscapes. Increasingly, Landcare members focus on whole catchment and regional themes, rather than confining themselves to their own properties.
Climate
Click here for detailed climate averages of the district. These averages are taken from Stawell, which is 16 km from Boroka as the 'crow flies'. We believe the temperature averages to be similiar to ours but we receive some 15-20 percent more rain.
